03.11.05...I really don't mean to pick on Bill
Cosby.  Those watching me set up the
front page today think I have it out for the
guy.  True - I hated the old Cosby show in
the 80's because I thought it made America
look like a completely colorblind society
where any black couple could be rich and
never have to go to work.  True - I have
been finding his recent rants about how
"uncivilized" todays youth are to be
annoying and condescending.  But really I
just want to point out a trend that has come
to epitomise this so-called conservative
revolution in America. Those who place
themselves on high moral ground are so
frequently found to be more sinful than the
people they choose to criticize.

So it's not that the Coz seems to have
frequent affairs and at least one child out
of his marriage.  It's that he continues to
act like a self righteous Red American
leaning back in his chair, making us call
him Dr. Cosby, and giving pronouncements
on morality and the American way.

I have a theory on why this is.

Zealots, like Bill Cosby, are just
covering up their own indiscretions
and insecurities.

Homophones have a secret gay side they
fear (Bill O'Reilly), those who write books
on morality have secret gambling problems
(William Bennett), law and order radio
hosts hide secret drug habits (Rush
Limbaugh), those who wrap themselves in
flags break the law instantly when they are
in hot water (Oliver North, G. Gordon
Liddy).  Believe me, the list does go on and
on.  Let me be fair.  My theory works both
ways.  I will even use myself as an
example.  I always call for the rich to pay
more of the burden in taxes.  In my dark
moments of imagining winning the lottery or
something I do see myself becoming a
selfish guy who will hoard every penny
even more than I do now!  I want the rich to
pay more because I feel, that otherwise no
money would ever trickle down.

In my theory, I despise greed
precisely because I am deep down
a greedy person.

I really wonder sometimes that if I were to
be instantly rich I would turn into the
hardest ass Republican in the world. I can
really see me saying "it's my money".  Not
that I would not share with family and close
friends.  Just that my tendencies for
generosity would (I think) weaken under
the pressure of actually having something
to loose.

So when Bill Cosby or anyone else makes
moral condemnation of others it instantly
rubs me the wrong way.  He is preaching
morals because he semi-consciously
knows he needs to hear and follow that.
Homphobes fear gay rights because they
harbor a subtle belief that if it was more
accepted they may have drifted over to
"the other team".  And how many law and
order types have to go to jail before we
see the connection.  The BTK killer is only
the latest example.

Red America is run by a set of moralists
right now.  Rather than seeing them as
stalwart of truth, justice and the American
way I see deeply flawed people
overcompensating for their own inner
demons why the rest of us are strongly
encourage to do as they say.  They do it, I
do it and Bill Cosby does it.  So Bill - I am
not picking on you as a person.  Party on!
Believe me when I say I don't care how
many women you have. Just please don't
tell me you are an example of anything I
should emulate.
The grandson of President Franklin
Roosevelt said Bush's privatization
plan does not prolong the life of Social
Security "by a single day." He said
there is no place for private a
ccounts
in any reform plan.
